Magic is Returning to Middle-earth With The Brand New Universes Beyond Set: The Hobbit
After the massive success of The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth, Magic: The Gathering is heading back to Tolkien’s world. Magic: The Gathering: The Hobbit is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated releases of 2026, blending nostalgia, iconic characters, and fresh mechanical ideas into a single adventure.
A Return to Middle-earth—But Smaller, Stranger, and Darker
Unlike the sweeping war narrative of the previous set, The Hobbit focuses on a single journey: the unexpected adventure of Bilbo Baggins and a company of dwarves reclaiming their home. That shift in scope matters.

The set leans into both the whimsy and the darker undertones of the original novel—trolls, riddles in the dark, and the looming terror of Smaug all play a role. Expect a tone that swings between cozy storytelling and creeping danger.
This tonal balance could translate into gameplay mechanics that reward risk-taking, treasure-building, and clever resource management—fitting for a burglar who wins by wit rather than strength.
Release Date and What to Expect
Mark your calendar: the set launches globally on August 14, 2026, with prerelease events starting the week before.
We will be running prerelease events and Draft Nights. Keep an eye on the website and all our socials for when we announce dates for those!
We will be taking pre-orders as soon as we are able to. Below is what will be available to pre-order:
- Play Boosters
- Bundles
- Collector Boosters
- Scene Box
- Gift Bundle
- Draft Night Box

Iconic Characters, Re-imagined as Cards
If you loved seeing Gandalf and Aragorn translated into Magic mechanics, this set doubles down on that idea.
Confirmed and previewed cards include:
-
Bilbo in multiple forms (burglar, trickster, reluctant hero)

-
Thorin Oakenshield and the dwarven company

-
Smaug as a likely high-impact finisher

-
Tom, Bert, and William, The Trolls

-
The Arkenstone and other legendary artifacts

These designs aim to capture story moments directly—like riddles, treasure hoards, and unexpected alliances—turning narrative beats into gameplay decisions.
“My Precious”: A New Take on the One Ring
One of the most intriguing reveals so far is a new legendary card tied to the Ring itself, called My Precious. This Legendary Artifact Equipment allows you to cast it as an Adventure to draw two cards, sacrificing a creature as an additional cost, putting the Artifact into exile, then you can cast it from exile back onto the battlefield. The Equipment itself gives the equipped creatures hexproof and can't be blocked, at the cost of paying 2 life to equip.

This creates an interesting design space, The Ring is a powerful artifact but at a cost. How far will you let The Ring corrupt to achieve your goals?
